以女性觀點出發,重新詮釋布袋戲經典角色,並賦予其新意。本劇串聯傳統劇目中《苦守寒窯十八年》的王寶釧,痴痴地等待、對薛平貴的癡情;《水漫金山寺》的白素貞,對抗天倫解救許仙的真情;《武松打虎》的潘金蓮,不顧倫理,追求自我的真性情。將三位女人的淚水化做「湯」,作為遺忘重生的符號,敘述內心的衝擊與對命運的不滿。

在傳統的演出架構下,以布袋戲口白、操偶方式、北管音樂,配合斗篷大布幔、移動舞台與光影,打破大眾對布袋戲演出的既定印象以及視覺,並發展出「傳統新藝」的當代布袋戲新面貌。2018年外亞維儂藝術節共有1538個節目,《孟婆.湯》被大幅報導,讓更多外國人看見台灣傳統戲曲。

Reinterpreting the classic roles in glove puppet theatre from a female point of view, this performance revisits Wang Baochuan who foolishly waits 18 years for her husband’s return in Waiting 18 Years in a Cold Cave; Bai Suzhen who confronts the heavenly order to save Xu Xian’s true feelings in The Flooding of Jinshan Temple; and Pan Jinlian who, regardless of the morals of the time, pursues her true feelings, in Wu Song Fights the Tiger. The tears of these three women are transformed into a “soup” as a symbol of forgetting and rebirth, in a narration featuring “shocks to the soul” and a dissatisfaction with one’s fate.    

Using a traditional performance framework, the classic speech and hand articulations of glove puppet theatre and music from the Beiguan tradition are accompanied by a movable stage, cloth backdrops, and the use of light and shadow. This performance works to break open the public’s stereotypes regarding glove puppet theatre. In doing so, it hopes to develop a new traditional art form through this reinvention of glove puppet theatre.    

There were 1538 performances at the Festival d'Avignon Off 2018. The Soup of Reincarnation was one of the few singled out by the media for its excellent introduction to Taiwanese traditional theatre.  ​


 製作團隊 Production Team

「真快樂掌中劇團」創辦人江賜美女士,為台灣布袋戲界的第一代女演師,從事掌中戲藝術迄今七十年,唱、唸、道白與掌中技藝,與台灣同輩演師競技稱雄。傳子柯加財,從小學習傳統布袋戲曲,接觸戲劇藝術已五十餘載;從事布袋戲之編導及主演多年,對於掌中藝術製作與演出,皆能發揮本身之特長。第三代柯世宏與柯世華傳承掌中藝術及參與國內外藝術節的演出與國際偶戲研習,希望對布袋戲有新的契機。2018年以《孟婆‧湯》榮獲第29屆傳藝金曲獎「最佳團體年度演出獎」之殊榮。近年第三代的布袋戲跨界與跨媒材的演出形式,受到廣大的迴響與喜愛。目前一家三代傳承,共同為本土掌中戲文化延續而努力的優秀成績,在掌中戲界傳為佳話。

Jin Kwei Lo Puppetry Company is one of the few Taiwanese theatres with 3 generations. The founder Chiang Szu-mei is one of the first generations of female traditional palmar drama puppeteers, now still working in the field of puppet theatre in the age of 88. Her son Ko Chia-tsai is also an important figure in Taiwanese palmar drama theatre. He learnt palmar drama since childhood, and had worked as a palmar drama artist for over 50 years. The third generation Ko Shih- Hung and Ko Shih-Hua took up the art of palmar drama and  participated in local and international art festivals while researching on world puppetry. They mean to pass on the delicate art of Taiwanese palmer drama and at the same time learn western puppetry, hoping to discover new possibilities of palmar drama in the clash of traditional and modern puppetry. In Recent years, their experiment on cross-field, cross-media performance had been well received and praised by the audience. The three generations are highly respected in traditional puppet art community in Taiwan for their effort to preserve and transform the art.  ​
